Gender-conscious approaches to everyday language

Take part in a project about gender and everyday language

The School of Modern Languages is currently carrying out a project called ‘Gender-conscious approaches to everyday language’.

Their goal is to develop a glossary of terms related to gender, to serve as a resource for staff and students of Newcastle University. It will provide a way to better understand these complex and sensitive topics, and to start conversations about them. More generally, it will provide guidance as to what might or might not be appropriate language within the context of the university – and beyond. The main language will be English, but they also want to make the glossary as accessible as possible for the international, multilingual community that is Newcastle University. It will therefore be translated into the main languages spoken on campus.

In order to develop this glossary, we need as much input as possible from with staff and students across the university. If you are interested in the topic and want an easy way to make suggestions, could we ask you to please fill in this short questionnaire?

If you have any questions about the project, don’t hesitate to reach out to Anne-Charlotte Husson or to our student intern Siân Dickie.
