Here in the North East, we have an old Geordie saying “Welcome Hyem” meaning “welcome home”. Whether you are joining us in Newcastle for the first time or you’re returning to campus, we couldn’t be more excited to have you.
It’s competition time
To celebrate the start of this new academic year, we are running a photography competition between Tuesday 20 – Thursday 29 September 2022, where prizes will be awarded for the most creative shots from around the University’s campus and across the city.
Geordies, the nickname for people from Newcastle, have always been rightly proud of Newcastle’s city centre. There’s evidence of Norman and Roman heritage as well as the lasting legacy of the industrial revolution and striking 19th and 20th-century architecture. We also know this pride has stretched around the world with students voting Newcastle as top 50 student city globally in the QS Best Student Cities ranking in 2023.
Whether it’s the wildlife and nature in Leazes Park, the serenity of the Hatton Gallery or the elegance of Grey Street, we want you to discover and share your favourite parts of Newcastle city and the University’s campus in our #WelcomeHyem photography competition.
How to enter
Simply capture your favourite view, building, bridge or site from the areas and post your photo to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and WeChat. Make sure you tag our handle and use the hashtag #WelcomeHyem to have your chance at winning exciting prizes, including an Instax Mini Camera! The competition is open to new and returning students. You can enter as many times as you like but please read the terms and conditions for full details.
If you’re looking for inspiration, check out our student blog post which explains why Newcastle is a great city to photograph and some of the best places to capture (and explore!) in the city. You can get to know Newcastle by checking out a map of our campus and city centre.
Best of luck and happy snapping!
