Student Life

On Wednesday 28 November, Newcastle University Business School held its first Masters’ Open Day of the academic year to great success. Some of the Postgraduate Business Ambassadors and I went along to support the event. As a current Master’s student, I found the Open Day really interesting – and it is definitely beneficial to anyone considering a Business Master’s Degree.

The Open Day included a selection of information sessions that (talking as a prospective student from last year) I know will be really helpful when it comes to making the big postgraduate decision later. It also gave the attendees plenty of opportunities to ask staff, academics and current students any questions.

Arrival and Subject Open Fair

From arrival onwards of course, the Business School had provided plenty of refreshments to keep the attendees going throughout the afternoon. The session started really informally with prospective students given the opportunity to chat with staff from different subject areas and current Masters students whilst enjoying some coffee and cake. Attendees were able to ask questions about the courses, the Business School and more, as well as obtain reassurance about any concerns they may have had.

Why Study at Newcastle University Business School?

Following the Open Fair, there was a short series of presentations, starting with Dr Sara Maioli, the School’s Director of Postgraduate Studies, discussing ‘Why Study a Business Masters?’ and outlining the value of postgraduate study at our triple-accredited School. The session highlighted the brilliant academic staff at the Business School and, as a current student, I relate to this in my personal experience. Feedback from some attendees was that they found out about Masters courses that they might not have considered previously.

Careers and Employability

Next up was a Careers and Employability talk from Chris Traynor, Guidance Team Manager at Newcastle University’s Careers Service. Chris emphasised that the Master’s year is very short and you need start thinking about careers early on. Having a good Careers Service is very important for this reason, and Newcastle University offers you award winning support – not only during your course but for three years afterwards as well. Chris gave lots of great advice and outlined all the assistance you can get from the Careers Team. This includes mock interviews and assessment centres, as well as CV feedback and one-on-one chats with a Careers Adviser.

Q&A with Masters Students

In the next session, a panel of current Masters students held a Q&A for the attendees. It was a great opportunity for prospective students to get the chance to hear from the people actually studying a Master’s here. The Q&A setting means you can hear answers to questions you may never have thought of.  You are always welcome to get in touch if you want to talk to a current student throughout the year.

Applying For and Funding Your Masters

Finally, the Open Day finished with information on Application and Funding from Steve Bremner from the School’s Postgraduate Recruitment Team. Applying for your Masters at Newcastle University Business School is a lot simpler than you may think and there is no application deadline for most of the courses. There are different funding options available and it’s really helpful to learn about them when you are considering studying here.
