Newcastle University Business School is excited to once again be able to celebrate the diversity of our student body as part of our annual Multicultural Month in February. While we are sadly unable to share experiences on campus this year, we are pleased to let you know that we will be holding virtual events as part of our celebration. The wide range of cultures and nationalities embedded in our university provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about cultural differences and experience them ourselves. Below are some of the ways we are organising this virtually throughout February.
Language Taster Sessions
Many of you will be familiar with the opportunity to learn a language for free via the Language Resource Centre, and in Multicultural Month we will be bringing the LRC to Business School students with some taster classes. These sessions will be an hour-long and open to all students and staff, to learn some basic phrases in a new language, and a chance to learn a little bit more about the culture. These were offered last year and went down very well with staff and students. We have tried to select languages that will not only be useful for students planning for a global career, but also those that you may not have had the opportunity to learn over the course of your education!
Details of the classes will be shared in February and we encourage you to sign up to as many as you like – you might find you have a talent or passion for something new!
Spotlight on Student Societies
There is such a range of societies at Newcastle University that can help you to learn about different cultures and offer the chance to experience new celebrations. We will be shining a spotlight on some of these societies to find out more about the events they hold and the benefits they bring to our city and university. Student societies can be a valuable support network for students, and a chance to make friends from all over the world.
Visit our student blog throughout February to read posts by current students and staff celebrating their cultures, find out about special celebrations, favourite foods and traditional customs.
Finally – keep an eye out on our social media channels for new blog posts throughout the month, as well as regular quizzes to test your global and local knowledge!
