Everything you should be getting involved in this semester

Congratulations on making it through Semester 1, and of course… exams! Now that they’re out of the way, there’s plenty of time to get involved in all of the activities that are on offer during Semester 2.

I have put together a list of some of the things I think you could benefit from going along to. These range from career development type activities, to social occasions such as the Business School Ball!

Career Development

Various skills workshops

We all want to leave university with a good degree, and the hopes of finding a good job/graduate position. To do this, you need a variety of skills, some of which you won’t be able to learn in the lecture theatre. The careers service offer a range of workshops in things such as writing CV’s, interview preparation, and tips for your social media. It really is a good idea to go along to these sessions to ensure you’re ready to enter the working world.

Placement motivator workshop – Tuesday 6 February, 15.30 – 16.30pm

If you’re a stage 2 student still looking for a placement, or wanted to do one but gave up, pop along to the placement motivator workshop for advice and tips on where to go from now. Don’t give up on the placement search! They are definitely worthwhile so stick at it and eventually you will land one!

Business Networking

Lecture Series

Ever heard of the saying it’s not what you know, it’s who you know? Both the Leadership Series, and Goldman Lecture Series which will take place in semester 2 can help you out with that. These are amazing opportunities to hear from visiting professors and industry leaders. As well as a chance to network with local businesses and as Newcastle University Business School alumni.

Global Awareness and Influence

Gain a Global Advantage (GaGA) – Wednesday 21 February, 12:30 – 19:00

At GaGA, you will have the chance to hear from some really big name companies from around the world. Go along to as many of the sessions as you would like, and hear inspirational stories from speakers from PwC, Adidas, Lloyds Bank, Pure Gym and more! It is a great opportunity to boost your global employability (especially when a global outlook is one of the increasingly important things that employees look for when recruiting), as well as a genuinely interesting day!

Brexit Lecture Series

Over the semester, you have the chance to go along to the Brexit lecture series, which will give you an insight into exactly what the consequences of Brexit are. They’re a great way to network, as well as a way to keep up to date on the UK’s position post-Brexit.

Study Support and Wellbeing

Better Health – Eldon Leisure

With all of the stress that comes with Uni, it’s important that you have the chance to unwind. What better way is there to do that than with a free massage! Eldon Leisure will be giving out free shoulder massages in the Business School Foyer as well as student discounts and offers! Check the calendar to find out when.

Guest Lecturers

Explore University beyond your degree programme! There are many opportunities to hear from guest speakers from a range of industries here at the Business School. They are a great way to gain an insight into things you are not currently studying. For example, this semester, there are sessions on fashion and digital communications with Barbour, Jonathan Ward and his move from the fashion industry to entrepreneur as well as a session on Big Data.

Social and Cultural Engagement

Multicultural Month – February 01 – 28

One of the best things about the Business School is the variety of cultures of its students. This is why the whole of February will be spent celebrating them! From food, to dancing and language lessons there is so much going on that you can get involved in. There will even be a multicultural pub quiz! So grab your friends and come along for a night of fun, laughter and of course… a little friendly competition.

Social Programme – York and Lake District

York – 03 February

Lake District – 28 April

As someone who went along to the social programme in Edinburgh last year, I can honestly say that the trips are definitely worth getting involved in. For only a small cost, your travel to and from the destination are sorted, and what you do for the rest of your day is entirely up to you! There are two trips this semester – York and the Lake District… so sign up now to make sure you don’t miss out on exploring a beautiful city, or picturesque countryside.

Business School Ball

Your time at University can’t be all work no play, and the Business School Ball in March is the perfect way to socialise and have fun! It’s the perfect opportunity to get together with current friends, and dance the night away with new ones as the ball is open to all years and degree programmes. With food, drink, music and dancing, it’s sure to be a night to remember! Tickets will be on sale in the Business School.
