Placement Opportunity – The Government Economic Service (GES)

Calling stage 2 ECONOMICS students

The Government Economic Service (GES) will begin accepting applications for the centrally run sandwich student placement scheme for 2018-19 from 12.00pm Tuesday 10th October to 12.00pm on Thursday 12th October 2017.

The placements are aimed at economics students who are seriously considering a career in the Government Economic Service after graduation. The list of participating Departments, job descriptions and the Word version of the application form are also available on the website.

This year the scheme will close at 12.00pm on Thursday 12th October which will allow all students 48 hours to send in their applications. In previous years, we stopped accepting applications as soon as the sufficient number of applications have been received and we hope the new 48-hour opening window give all students a fair chance at submitting their applications. Applications submitted after the scheme has closed will not be accepted.

Please Note: It may be handy to comlpete your application form before applications open so that you are not rushing it!

The placements start in summer 2018 and last for approximately one year. Salaries vary from Department to Department and are listed on the job descriptions.

Applications will only be considered on the standard Word application form, which will be available on the website when the scheme opens.

In sifting the applications to decide which candidates to invite for interview, particular weight will be attached to the sections on competencies, extra-curricular activities and career choice.

Candidates who are successful at the sift stage are likely to be invited for interview in the period of November – December 2017.

To be eligible, applicants must be

  • A UK national, Commonwealth citizen, or a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), and
  • Studying for a degree in economics or, if it is a joint degree, economics must comprise at least 50% of the total course, or doing a Masters’ degree in economics.

 Post Placement Graduate Scheme

This year we are pleased to announce and enhancement to the already successful placement scheme.  We are planning to enhance the scheme by making an offer of a two-year provisional (fixed term) contract to those students to take up upon graduation and who:

  • Are on track for 2:1 degree in Economics
  • Are assessed to have successfully completed their placement by their line managers
  • Have passed a Civil Service Economic Assessment Centre towards the end of their placement

This means that the placement scheme is now a gateway to a career as a government and all students will still be able to apply for the Civil Service Fast Stream to become permanent.
