Newcastle Work Experience (NWE) is a summer work experience programme providing current and graduating Newcastle University students the opportunity to undertake challenging, project-based internships within Newcastle University and North East businesses.

Digital Media Intern - Dove Marine Lab, Newcastle University

The Dove Marine Laboratory is looking to recruit a Digital Media Intern. The School of Marine Science and Technology focuses on the role of the oceans in global change and the consequences for sustainable use of the seas, the conservation of sea life and marine management.

The school has a successful distance learning course, Delve Deeper, which is currently being redeveloped for a high profile launch in autumn of this year. The aim of this internship is to help to develop exciting content and learning materials using the diverse marine habitats of our region for this relaunch.

The internship will involve filming activities with academic staff and stakeholders throughout the North East region to create learning materials and digital content for the online distance learning course, Delve Deeper. Specifically we would like the successful candidate to:

  • Take the lead to design, film and edit a MOOC style advert for the course, see https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/hadrians-wall for an example
  • Input creatively and conduct on location filming of marine species and habitats across the North East region
  • Communicate with academics and stakeholders to organise topic based video sessions with support from the project lead
  • Input into different novel methods of developing digital content based on the structure of the course. The details of the modules involved can be supplied to shortlisted candidates to help shape ideas for interview

This internship will be based at the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats.

Start time is flexible but it is anticipated you will start around the beginning of July until beginning of September, working for 10 weeks full time.

Business Development Intern, Million Care Solutions

This position is for 10 weeks part time to be worked between June and September 2017.

Million Care Solutions is a business committed to improving the lives of residents and their care workers in the residential care home market.

Created with the support of Newcastle University’s Foundership programme, we aim to help owners and managers of care homes support their staff to deliver the best care possible by providing products and services which are easy and practical to use – enhancing productivity while reducing wastage.

As a fresh young company based at The Core, it is currently a very exciting time for Million Care Solutions. At the centre of many political debates, Adult Social Care is a sector in need of great change – we are passionate about being at the forefront of this change! Having designed and created an electronic system to be used by care staff to detail all aspects of resident care in elderly care settings, we are currently holding meetings with care providers. Million Care Solutions is quickly building a keen prospective customer base ahead of the launch of MiCarePlan in October 2017.

The successful applicant will build communication channels with key influencers within the social care sector, while exploring the sector and potential customers. Skills set dependant, the successful applicant may have the opportunity to collaborate on sales, implementation and training plans.

Currently expanding, it is possible a promising intern may be offered a long term placement and potentially a position within the company.

Person Requirements: We are currently seeking an individual studying towards a business focused degree or previous experience of running a business.

It is preferred, but not necessary, that the successful applicant has some understanding or experience of elderly care – professionally or personally.

Excellent communication skills, the ability to prioritise, and organisation are key. Further to this, we seek a compassionate and understanding individual willing to better understand the current pressures of the sector.
